James Bay

After Nunavik, James Bay is the largest tourist region in Quebec, covering 350,000 square kilometers. The region alone is one-fifth the size of the province in which it is located. The region lies between the 49th and 55th parallels and shares borders with five other tourist regions: Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Mauricie, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Duplessis, and Nunavik to the far north. The Cree, the first people to inhabit the region, call this part of the land “Eeyou Itschee”, or Land of the People. This vast expanse of green is ideal for die-hard nature lovers!

In the Northern, we find the boreal forest, characterized by conifers and increasingly rare deciduous trees that gradually merge into the taiga. Moreover, this wild territory allows for the observation of a fascinating and diverse fauna and flora. James Bay attracts outdoor enthusiasts who cannot resist observing, learning, and exploring their surroundings. They listen carefully to every forest sound, hoping to spot a lynx or a snowy owl. They learn about the habits and customs of the Cree, of whom there are over 13,000 in the region. Visitors traverse from one covered bridge to another, capturing photos, and in the evening, they hope to witness the mesmerizing aurora borealis. Many visitors take advantage of the vast spaces for camping and engage in an incredible array of sports and activities. Snowmobiling reigns supreme in this region, where exceptional snow conditions prevail.
